The Invitations

We were extremely honoured to be asked to create the invitations for Carl & Daniel's frivolous, fun-filled, four-day destination wedding in the heart of the French Pyrenees.

However, there was one very important element to the brief - the location of the wedding was to be kept a secret from all the guests until the day they arrived at the venue in France. Carl & Daniel had found the perfect venue for their wedding and wanted to surprise their loved ones on the day!

Carl & Daniel are from Melbourne and most of their guests were from Australia with a few special friends from around the world. Carl & Daniel were living in London at the time, so we coordinated the stationery through email and Skype (thank god for technology). When we Googled the venue,
Château de Gudanes, our jaws dropped to the floor.

So, the challenge was to create a cohesive set of stationery that would be an 8-card series but given out to guests at different times during the lead up to the wedding.

We kept the design of the invitations very minimal and focused on the idea of depicting the flowers that would be at the wedding. The C
hâteau is surrounded by beautiful wildflowers, so we designed the invitations to be discreet but also subtly hinting at the location.

The first three cards to be sent out to guests, about a year before the wedding, were the main invitation, along with two information cards (without giving too many details about the venue away). We included a band around the cards with the words, "We kindly ask that you bring these cards with you to France." Please note that some parts of the image below has been redacted for privacy.

On the day the guests arrived at the Château, which was a Friday, a further four cards were given out with the wedding long weekend plans outlined on each card.

In London, Carl & Daniel had organised some gorgeous gift boxes with gold foiling from Tiny Box Company to place the four cards in. They handed this out on the first day, along with bonbonnieres, which were beautiful hand-picked antique treasures for each person. This box would become each guest's keepsake to store the invitations and memories from the wedding.

On the final day, Carl & Daniel handed out a printed photograph from the wedding to each guest to add to the keepsake box. A few months later, they sent out the eighth and final card of the set, which was the thank you card.
